Jacques-Yves Cousteau, commonly known in English as Jacques Cousteau was born in Saint-André-de-Cubzac, Gironde, France. He was a French naval officer, explorer, photographer and documentary filmmaker who studied the sea. Although he is most famous to us from his television programmes, he also co-developed the aqua-lung, and pioneered marine conservation as a political and scientific priority. He described his underwater world research in a series of books, perhaps the most successful being his first book, The Silent World: A Story of Undersea Discovery and Adventure, published in 1953. He directed several documentary films include: Epaves, Danger Under the Sea, The Silent World(Won- Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature), and World Without Sun(Won- Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature).
