John Hayden Fry was born in Eastland, Texas, USA. He is a former American football player and coach. He graduated from Baylor University with a degree in psychology in 1951. He was an American history teacher and assistant football coach at Odessa High School for a year in 1951. He played college football for Baylor University. He served as the head coach at Southern Methodist University, the University of North Texas, and the University of Iowa, compiling a career college football record of 232–178–10. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 2003.
