Edith Stein was born in Breslau, Silesia, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire. She was a German Jewish philosopher who converted to the Roman Catholic Church and became a Discalced Carmelite nun. She is a martyr and saint of the Catholic Church. In 1916, she received a doctorate of philosophy from the University of Freiburg with a dissertation under the philosopher Edmund Husserl, Zum Problem der Einfühlung.
