George Ripley was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts, USA. He was an American social reformer and journalist associated with Transcendentalism. He was the founder of the short-lived Utopian community Brook Farm in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. He completed his studies at Harvard College in 1823. After Brook Farm's failure, he was hired by Horace Greeley at the New York Tribune. He also published the New American Cyclopaedia, which made him financially successful. He then edited Harper's Magazine. Together with Bayard Taylor he compiled a Handbook of Literature and the Fine Arts.
