Alexander George Sutherland was born in Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire, England. He was an English-born American judge and politician. He earned his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School. He served as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court between 1922 and 1938. In 1896, he was elected as a Republican to the newly created Utah State Senate from 1897-1901. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Utah's At-large district from 1901-1903. He was elected to the United States Senate from Utah from 1905-1917. He served as President of the American Bar Association from 1916 to 1917.
