John Brough was born in Marietta, Ohio, USA. He was an American politician. He served as the 26th Governor of Ohio (1864-1865) during the final years of the American Civil War. He studied at Ohio University, where he worked part-time as a reporter for the Athens Mirror. He rose to become a newspaper publisher in Marietta and then in Lancaster. He was elected as a Democrat to the Ohio House of Representatives in 1837. He was a trustee of Ohio University from 1840 to 1843. In 1841, he and his brother bought the Cincinnati Advertiser and renamed it the Cincinnati Enquirer.
