James Ronald "Jim" Ryun was born in Wichita, Kansas, USA. He is a former American Republican politician and track and field athlete. He won a silver medal in the men's 1500 metres at the 1968 Summer Olympics. He was the first high school athlete to run a mile in under four minutes. He is the most recent American to hold the world record for the mile. He was a Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Kansas's 2nd congressional district from 1996-2007. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 1970 with a degree in photojournalism. He has written several books include: In Quest of Gold (with Michael Phillips), Heroes Among Us, and The Courage to Run.
