John Selden was born in Salvington, Sussex, England. He was an English jurist, politician, philosopher, writer and a scholar of England's ancient laws and constitution and scholar of Jewish law. He studied at Hart Hall, Oxford University. Called to the bar in 1612, he practiced as a conveyancer, rarely appearing in court. His first major book, Titles of Honour, has remained a useful reference. Analecton Anglo-Britannicon was a history of civil government in Britain before the Norman Conquest. In 1647 he published the first printed edition of the old English lawbook Fleta. He was served as the UK Member of Parliament for Ludgershall and Oxford University.
