Sir John Alexander Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was a Canadian politician and lawyer. He was the first Prime Minister of Canada. The dominant figure of Canadian Confederation, he had a political career which spanned almost half a century. As a lawyer he was involved in several high-profile cases and quickly became prominent in Kingston, which elected him in 1844 to the legislature of the Province of Canada. By 1857, he had become premier under the colony's unstable political system. He was appointed a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath on that first observance of what came to be known as Canada Day, 1 July 1867.
