John Bulwer was born in London, England. He was an English physician, author, Baconian natural philosopher and educator of the deaf, best known for his four late-Renaissance texts, which called on his knowledge of deafness, sign language, and the human body: Chirologia; or, The Natural Language of the Hand; Philocopus; or, The Deaf and Dumb Man’s Friend; Pathomyotamia; or, A Dissection of the Significative Muscles of the Affections of the Mind; and Anthropometamorphosis; or, The Artificial Changeling. Between 1650-1653, he acquired a MD degree at an unknown European university.
