John Buford, Jr. was born in Woodford County, Kentucky, USA. He was an American Army cavalry officer. He fought for the Union as a brigadier general during the American Civil War. He graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1848. Buford was given his first position in 1862, under Major General John Pope. He is best known for having played a major role in the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg on July 1, 1863 while in command of a division. In 1895, a bronze statue of Buford designed by artist James E. Kelly was dedicated on the Gettysburg Battlefield. In 1992, the M8 Buford light tank was produced and named after him.
