Frank Press was born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York, USA. He is an American geophysicist. An advisor to four U.S. Presidents, he later served two consecutive terms as President of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. He is the author of 160 scientific papers and co-author of the textbooks Earth and Understanding Earth. In addition, he was chairman of the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at M.I.T. and professor of geophysics at California Institute of Technology. He graduated with a B.S. degree from the City College of New York and completed his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Columbia University under Maurice "Doc" Ewing.
