Jerome A. Hines was born in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA. He was an American opera singer who performed at the New York Metropolitan Opera from 1946-87. He earned a BS degree in mathematics and chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1943. He made his professional debut in the role of Monterone in Verdi’s Rigoletto at the San Francisco Opera House in 1941. He was known for his rich and flexible voice as well as his imposing stage presence. Among his best-known roles were those of Ramfis in Verdi’s Aida, Méphistophélès in Gounod’s Faust, and the title role in Boris Godunov. He was married to the soprano Lucia Evangelista in 1952. They had four sons.
