Isidora Dolores Ibárruri Gómez- known as "La Pasionaria" was born in Gallarta, Basque Country, Spain. She was a Spanish Republican leader of the Spanish Civil War and communist politician. She is perhaps best known for her defense of the Second Spanish Republic and the famous slogan ¡No Pasarán! during the Battle for Madrid in November 1936. She was appointed General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Spain, a position she held from 1942 to 1960.
