Sir John Anthony Pople was born in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, England. He was a British theoretical chemist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Walter Kohn in 1998 for his development of computational methods in quantum chemistry. He earned with a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Cambridge University in 1946. Between 1945 and 1947 he worked at the Bristol Aeroplane Company. He received his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1951. He served as professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He received many awards and honours include: Mayhew Prize, Fellow of the Royal Society, Irving Langmuir Award, Davy Medal, Wolf Prize in Chemistry, Copley Medal, and Knighthood.
