Erskine Boyce Bowles was born in Greensboro, North Carolina, USA. He is an American businessman and politician. In 1975, he helped launch the investment firm of Bowles Hollowell Conner, and remained in the corporate sector until the 1990s. In 1997–98 he served as White House Chief of Staff. He served from 2005 to 2010 as the president of the University of North Carolina system. In 2010 he served as the Democratic co-chair of President Barack Obama's National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility. He graduated with a business degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He enrolled in Columbia Business School, where he earned an MBA.
