Hannah Cowley was born in Tiverton, England. She was an English playwright and poet. She wrote several plays include: The Runaway, Who's the Dupe?, Which is the Man?, Albina, The Belle's Stratagem, A Bold Stroke for a Husband, and The Town Before You. She wrote plays until 1794, and then retired to Tiverton, where she composed long narrative poems under the pseudonym "Anna Matilda" and presided over a salon for women.
