John Lynch Phillips was born in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, USA. He is an American astronaut. He is also a Naval Aviator and retired captain, United States Navy Reserve. He earned a BS degree in mathematics and Russian from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1972. He earned an MS degree in aeronautical systems from the University of West Florida in 1974. He received an MS degree and a doctorate in geophysics and space physics from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1984 and 1987 respectively. He has logged over 4,400 flight hours and 250 aircraft carrier landings, flying the A-7 Corsair II carrier-based light attack aircraft while on active duty in the Regular Navy and subsequently during his time as a Navy Reservist from 1982 to 2002. He has been awarded the NASA Space Flight Medal, NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and the Gagarin Medal.
