Elmer Rice was born in New York City, New York, USA. He was an American playwright. He is best known for his plays The Adding Machine and his Pulitzer Prize-winning drama of New York tenement life, Street Scene. His first work, the melodramatic On Trial, was the first play to employ on stage the motion-picture technique of flashbacks, in this case to present the recollections of witnesses at a trial. He also wrote several novels and an autobiography, Minority Report.
