John Francis "Jack" Reed was born in Cranston, Rhode Island, USA. He is an American Democratic politician and lawyer. He is the senior United States Senator from Rhode Island, serving since 1997. He served in the United States House of Representatives for Rhode Island's 2nd congressional district from 1991 to 1997. He served as Rhode Island state senator from 1985-1990. He earned a BS degree from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1971. Following graduation, he spent several years in active duty military service. He earned a Master of Public Policy degree from John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He returned to West Point in 1978 as an associate professor in the Department of Social Sciences. He earned his Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Harvard Law School in 1982. He worked as an associate at the Washington, D.C. office of law firm of Sutherland Asbill & Brennan.
