John Bordley Rawls was born in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. He was an American moral and political philosopher in the liberal tradition. He earned a BA degree in 1943 and his PhD in 1950 both from Princeton University. He held the Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Oxford. He served as professor of philosophy at Cornell University and Harvard University. He wrote several books include: A Theory of Justice, Justice as Fairness, Political Liberalism, and The Law of Peoples. He received both Rolf Schock Prizes (for Logic and Philosophy) and the National Humanities Medal in 1999.
