Brand Blanshard was born in Fredericksburg, Ohio. He was an American philosopher. A powerful polemicist, by all accounts he comported himself with courtesy and grace in philosophical controversies and exemplified the "rational temper" he advocated. Blanshard was a rationalist who espoused and defended a strong conception of reason during a century when reason came under philosophical attack. The Philosophy of Brand Blanshard, edited by Paul Arthur Schilpp, is volume XV in the Library of Living Philosophers series. For much of his life, he was Sterling Professor of Philosophy at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. He wrote his last book at the age of 92.
