God bless our good and gracious King Whose promise none relies on, Who never said a foolish thing Nor ever did a wise one.
John Wilmot Quotes
Then Old Age and Experience, hand in hand, Lead him to death, and make him understand, After a search so painful and so long, That all his life he has been in the wrong.

John Wilmot, 2nd Earl of Rochester was born in Oxfordshire, England. He was an English poet and courtier of King Charles II's Restoration court. He is as well known for his rakish lifestyle as his poetry, although the two were often interlinked. During his lifetime, he was best known for A Satyr Against Reason and Mankind, and it remains among his best known works today. He is also one of the most original and powerful of English satirists. His “History of Insipids” is a devastating attack on the government of Charles II, and his “Maim’d Debauchee” has been described as “a masterpiece of heroic irony.” He received his M.A. degree at Oxford in 1661.
