Emil Cioran was born in Rășinari, Sibiu County, Romania. He was a Romanian philosopher and writer, who published works in both Romanian and French. Cioran’s first book, the essays entitled "On the Heights of Despair", was published in 1934 in Romania it won the Prize of the Royal Academy for young writers. His first French book, A Short History of Decay, was awarded the prestigious Rivarol Prize in 1950. Successively, The Book of Delusions, The Transfiguration of Romania, and Tears and Saints, were also published in Romania. He studied literature and philosophy at the university of Bucharest.
