Franklin Knight Lane was born near Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. He was an American Democratic politician from California who served as United States Secretary of the Interior from 1913 to 1920. He also served as a commissioner of the Interstate Commerce Commission. He Elected City Attorney of San Francisco in 1898, a post he held for five years. He received honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from the University of California, from New York University, Brown University, and the University of North Carolina.
