Chauncey Mitchell Depew was born in Peekskill, New York. He was an American lawyer and politician. He was a United States Senator from New York from 1899 to 1911. He was admitted to the bar in March, 1858; opened an office and practiced in Peekskill until 1861. In 1865 DePew was appointed and confirmed United States Minister to Japan, but declined the appointment to pursue his career as a railroad and business lawyer.
