John Albert Bauer was born in Jönköping, Sweden. He was a Swedish painter and illustrator. He is best known for his illustrations of early editions of Bland tomtar och troll, an anthology of Swedish folklore and fairy tales. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. He painted and illustrated in a romantic nationalistic style, in part influenced by the Italian Renaissance and Sami cultures. Most of his works are watercolors or prints in monochrome or muted colours; he also produced oil paintings and frescos. His first chance to create a major work using this technique was in 1912, when he completed a 1.5-by-1.5-metre fresco-secco mural, Vill-Vallareman, at the home of publisher Erik Åkerlund. His last large work was an oil painting for the auditorium at the Karlskrona flickläroverk in 1917. His artworks list shown below: The Fairy Princess, Princess Tuvstarr gazing down into the dark waters of the forest tarn, and The Princess and the Trolls.
