Sir John Desmond Patrick Keegan was born in London, England. He was a British military historian and journalist. He studied at Balliol College, Oxford University. He was appointed to a lectureship in Military History at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst from 1960-1986. Leaving the academy in 1986 he joined the Daily Telegraph as a Defence Correspondent and remained with the publication as Defence Editor until his death, also writing for the American conservative website, National Review Online. He wrote several books include: The Face of Battle, Soldiers: A History of Men in Battle (with Richard Holmes), The Mask of Command, The Second World War, A History of Warfare, The First World War, Intelligence in War, The Iraq War, and The American Civil War. In 1993 he won the Duff Cooper Prize, and in 1996 he was awarded the Samuel Eliot Morison Prize for lifetime achievement given by the Society for Military History. In 1999 he was knighted "for services to Military History".
