Emil Erich Kästner was born in Dresden, Saxony, Germany. He was a German author, poet, screenwriter, and satirist, known primarily for his humorous, socially astute poems and for children's books including Emil and the Detectives. He received the international Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1960 for his autobiography When I Was a Young Man. He also wrote the remarkable tragic novel Fabian. After the war, Kästner became magazine editor of Die Neue Zeitung of Munich and subsequently founded a children’s paper. He wrote other books include: The Double Lottie, Into Faithful Hands, and The School of Dictators.
