Edward Emerson Barnard was born in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. He was an American astronomer. He is best known for his discovery of Barnard's Star in 1916, which is named in his honor. In 1895 he joined the University of Chicago as professor of astronomy. His first interest was in the field of photography, and he became a photographer's assistant at the age of nine. On May 12, 1881, Barnard discovered his first comet, which however he did not announce. He found his second comet on September 17 of the same year, and another one on September 13, 1882. In 1892, Barnard discovered Jupiter's fifth moon, Amalthea.
