Huey Percy Newton was born in Monroe, Louisiana, USA. He was an American political activist and revolutionary who, along with Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966. He continued to pursue an education, eventually earning a Ph.D. in social philosophy. He earned an Associate of Arts degree from Merritt College in 1966. He then attended San Francisco Law School, and the University of California at Santa Cruz, where he earned a bachelor's degree. In his autobiography, Revolutionary Suicide, he states: "Most of all, I questioned what was happening in my own family and in the community around me." In 1989 he was shot and killed in Oakland, California.
