John Lothrop Motley was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, USA. He was an American diplomat and historian. He was also a diplomat, who helped to prevent European intervention on the side of the Confederates in the American Civil War. He graduated from Harvard in 1831. He also studied at the University of Göttingen, Germany, and Humboldt University of Berlin. He served as the US Ambassador to Austria-Hungary from 1861-1867, and as the US Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1868-1870. He wrote several books include: Morton's Hope, Merry-Mount, The Rise of the Dutch Republic, History of the United Netherlands, and The Life And Death Of John Of Barneveld.
