Gilbert White was born in Selborne, Hampshire, England. He was a British naturalist and ornithologist. He is best known for his Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne. He educated at Oriel College, Oxford. White and William Markwick collected records of the dates of emergence of more than 400 plant and animal species, White recording in Hampshire and Markwick in Sussex between 1768 and 1793. He wrote several books include: A naturalist's calendar, Birds of Selborne, Thirty Years in Tropical Australia, and A Selborne year.
