David D. Burns was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is an American professor emeritus in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the author of the best-selling books Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy and The Feeling Good Handbook. He received his B.A. from Amherst College in 1964 and his M.D. from the Stanford University School of Medicine in 1970.
