James Beattie was born in Laurencekirk, Kincardineshire, Scotland. He was a Scottish poet, professor and philosopher. He educated at Marischal College, graduating in 1753. He was awarded an honorary LLD by Oxford University. In 1760, he was appointed Professor of moral philosophy. He wrote several books include: The Judgment of Paris(poem), An Essay on the Nature and Immutability of Truth, The Minstrel(poem), Essays on Poetry, Dissertations Moral and Critical, Elements of Moral Science, and The Poetical Works of James Beattie.
